Pitta pacifying food for summer

Pitta, a combination of firewater dominates the summer. While it helps in healthy digestion and focused productivity, the excess of this dosha can result in symptoms such as irritation, excessive body heat, and digestive problems.

The signs of excess pitta can be identified with acne, being critical of others, anger, indigestion, diarrhoea and others. Each individual expresses varying degrees of pitta and if you’re someone who naturally exhibits strong Pitta characteristics, you’re at an increased risk of imbalance.

The fiery nature of pitta can be balanced with a simple ayurvedic diet which includes more sweet, bitter, and astringent foods.

  • Instead of sugar and sweeteners, add foods that gently sweeten sharp pitta to your diet. Foods that you can include are grains: rice, barley, oats, fresh fruits like melons, cherries, figs, steamed root vegetables, coconut, avocado and others.
  • Balance the heat effect of pitta with bitter foods like leafy greens, black tea, ripe grapefruit, green apples, asparagus, green beans, summer squash, zucchini, cucumbers, fresh herbs like cilantro.
  • Astringent foods bring lightness to the mind and body. Hence consume foods like beans, lentils, fruits, raw vegetables
  • Lubricate the body with healthy oils such as coconut, ghee, sunflower oil, olive oil.

Besides a healthy diet, practice yoga and other moderate exercises to keep pitta balanced. Avoid strenuous exercise and foods that create warmth like foods and drinks that are salty, sour, or spicy.
